Whale Facts #1

The Southern Right Whale is the most renown of all the whales in South Africa.

When whaling was legal, these whales were thought of as the “right” whales to hunt; they move slowly, float to the surface when killed and have a high yield of oil as well as a very mellifluous baleen.

These whales were hunted ruthlessly and today a mere 10% of the original populations of these magnificent creatures have survived.

Migaloo the white whale not dead: expert

The off Queensland’s Palm Island is not the albino humpback , an expert says. The discovery of a off Palm Island, near Townsville, this week had sparked fears Migaloo had met his end.But after viewing photos and video footage of the dead animal, Centre founder Oskar Peterson said it was not Migaloo.”There are black spots on the whale and Migaloo is 100 per cent white,” Mr Peterson said today.Mr Peterson said all went belly up when they died, and as they were white underneath that might have led people to believe it was Migaloo.Migaloo shot to fame as the only known all in the world after being off Byron Bay in 1991. from the Hervey Bay area gave him his name, which means white fella.

His annual migration along Australia’s east coast is tracked by the White Whale Research Centre and he usually attracts crowds as soon as he is known to be in a particular area.

People who get too close to the whale can face fines of up to $16,500 because of special Queensland and Commonwealth to protect him from harassment.

All water vessels, including jet-skis, are prohibited from getting closer than 500 metres to Migaloo and aircraft cannot get closer than 2000 feet.
